Loving all the citrus right now! In the midst of flu+cold season keeping citrus fruits in regular dietary rotation can be a natural + powerful way to arm the body against illness and offer immune support! Vitamin C in citrus is a well known, powerful antioxidant that can protect the body against damaging free radicals but citrus also contains other powerful nutrients like folate, Thiamin( B vitamin) potassium, niacin, calcium, phosphorus, B6, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, riboflavin, and pantothenic acid along with an array phytochemicals. Flavonoids, a class of polyphenols and phytochemical are super powerful as well, flavonoids include: naringin, naringenin, nobelitin, narirutin, and hesperidin all which can help provide strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immune support, anticancer properties, and may help reduce risk of heart disease.
Tip: try keeping a variety of citrus in rotation. I have especially been loving grapefruit + Pomelos lately…. so good, refreshing, and pack a powerful nutrition punch! Adding Citrus to our diet can be super easy, try adding them to salads, smoothies, salsas, grain dishes, drinks, or simply enjoy them in their natural, whole form. Side note, did you know that if you add citrus to a spinach salad, the vitamin C from he citrus will help the non-heme form of iron in the spinach absorb in the body! I just love how nutrients work together to benefit our body! Cheers to Citrus!
